What is the Career Advancement Academy?
The academy is one of three regional workforce development programs funded by the Chancellor’s Office of the California Community Colleges, through the Governor’s Career Technical Education Initiative (SB 70, Scott).
How is the academy organized?
The East Bay academy operates as a collaborative effort among the Contra Costa and Peralta Community College Districts, seven participating colleges and communitybased partners in Alameda and Contra Costa counties.
Who is eligible to participate?
Adults between 18-30 years of age are encouraged to apply for the academy, regardless of past educational experience. A high school diploma is not required.
How does the registration process work?
Prospective students meet with a counselor who will provide personalized assistance, including assessment and enrollment. The academy works closely with each
college to provide a range of services, including books, fee waivers and financial aid.
What career paths are offered?
During the fall 2009 semester, the academy offers courses leading to over 20 career paths in sustainable industries of the future, such as bio-manufacturing,
renewable energy, automotive technology and many others.
What courses are required?
Students enroll in college credit courses – a counseling course and basic skills courses emphasizing reading, writing and math. Instruction is provided in a “contextualized” framework, using practical, industry-specific examples.
How are academy classes structured?
Students are placed together in groups, or “cohorts,” of no more than 25. Students and faculty form a supportive learning community designed to support
achievement and successful transition to further training or academic pursuits.
What happens when coursework is complete?
The academy is a focused, one semester program. Students completing the academy program will be better prepared for a wide variety of vocational and academic pursuits, as well as industry-specific training and employment opportunities.
